Caledonia Regional Chamber of Commerce Advocates for Increased Police Presence in School Zones

Updated: Sep 20

The Caledonia Regional Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Councillor Dan Lawrence of Haldimand County, is taking a proactive stance to ensure the safety of our community’s children. Recognizing the growing concerns around traffic and safety in school zones, the Chamber has formally requested an increased police presence from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

Councillor Dan Lawrence has highlighted the urgent need for law enforcement in our school zones, stating “The answer is law enforcement, but we don’t have it—we need more police presence for the safety of our kids, especially in school zones where there are crosswalks.”

Recent data shows a significant increase in vehicle traffic through Caledonia, particularly during school hours. This surge has raised the risk of accidents, especially in areas with crosswalks and school zones. The presence of law enforcement officers would serve as a deterrent to speeding and reckless driving, ensuring that our children can travel to and from school safely.

This initiative is backed by a broad coalition of residents, businesses, and local organizations. The Chamber is asking others who wish to see an increased police presence to copy/ paste the letter below and submit to the Haldimand County OPP office by mail at:

Letter to copy or edit:

I am writing to urgently request an increased police presence in Caledonia, particularly in our school zones.

Traffic has increased through Caledonia, particularly during school hours. This rise in traffic has heightened the risk of accidents and the presence of law enforcement officers would act as a deterrent to speeding and reckless driving, ensuring that our children can travel to and from school safely. Caledonia is home to several schools, and the safety of these students is paramount. Additionally, our community has seen a steady growth in population, with many young families moving into the area. This demographic shift further emphasizes the need for enhanced safety measures in school zones.

We respectfully urge the Ontario Provincial Police to prioritize this request and allocate additional resources to ensure the safety of our school zones.

The presence of law enforcement officers will not only enhance safety but also provide peace of mind to parents, educators, and the entire community.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. We look forward to your prompt response and action.

Sincerely,
